Terra MODIS

Image: Earth from Space

Today, with the google earth and satellite images, this seems like just another image of Earth. But I am always fascinated by the complexity and the precision of these images that are actually created from information and images gathered over many years and various instruments.

The clouds, the land texture, the ocean and even the city lights make this a spectacular image that is an amalgamation of science and art. This particular image of the eastern hemisphere is created with data from multiple satellite missions, followed by a group of scientists' and graphic designers' work to make it look like this. The data is gathered by the satellite Terra and the instrument MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) is used for measuring and creating photos of land, ocean and ice, while the city lights are visualized from data collected from the Defense meteorological satellite program and topography is based on radar data collected from Space shuttle endeavour and from the Radarsat Antarctic Mapping project.
